legal obligations
to ensure that the company cannot be sued contracts have to be sined with companys that are working on the project and forthe cast. the contract also enshures that the cast and crew are aware of any potental risks on set. the contract is a legal obligation to enshure that that the cast and crew aggreed to be part of the project, this is to also prove that someone agreed to be part of the project in case someone takes the company to cort for putting them in the film or for putting them in the creddits, if the company is able to present the contract then the company cannot be sued.
other legal obligations that a company would have to include would be copyright as if a film or tv show was based on a book the company would need to make sure that it was ok to make it with whoever owned the rights to the book, another way that they could do this would be by buying the movie rights to the book . although buying the rights is the most common way to make a film adaptation of a book it dose make the film budget lower as it could cost a lot of money. in the event that the auther agrees to have the book made into a film then it usually means that the film will have a bigger buget as they dident have to pay for the copyright, a good example of this would be game of thrones as the auther of a song of ice and fire agreed for HBO to adapt it into a tv show.
a director or producer cannot discriminate people if there a different race different gender or interested in the same sex. this is because of different acts that have been put in place over the last 20-30 years. if someone believes they are being discriminated then they can take someone to court over it. because of this people need to be careful about what they say as anything could offend. even if someone is making a joke and not being serious they could get into a lot of trouble and possibly loose there job.
job roals
there are many different jobs in the media industry some are more well known than the others but they are all important. some of the most important jobs are the producer, the director, the editors, the cameramen ad the sound operators. each of these jobs have a vital part in the production as without them the film would not be made.
the director is the person who organizes the film and how it is to be filmed, edited, soundtrack ect. the role of the director is the most stressful one as it will include many responsibility. the director oversees all of the progress made on the film, the director is massively involved in the early stages of the film as the story boards are drawn. the director also chooses the shots in during the creation of the storyboards and begins planning the editing. after the filming the director is involved with the editing. the director will talk with the editor and producer deciding what scenes to include and what scenes to delete. at the end of the films production the director has been involved in all aspects of creating the film.
the producer is someone who is sent by the company that is funding the film, the producer is the mangier of the production he/she is responsible for ensuring that the funds needed to pay for props, sets and to pay the cast and crew. the producer also need to ensure that the cast and crew are doing there job right. they also need to work with the director on set desine and what the cgi/ visual effects should look like. in some cases the producer is also the director, an example of this would be George Lucas during the filming of star wars ( before it was bought by disney)
the camera man and the sound man have one of the most important jobs during the production of the film, as they record the film, speech and foly they are essential to the production of the film. the Foley artists recreate sounds that may have been lost over the course of the filming. they recreate smaller sounds like footsteps, horse hoves hitting the ground.
editors put the film together after all the filming and any cgi characters or background are added. the editor creates the film and trys to do so where there are minimal errors in the film, an example of this would be a charterer who is looking streaght forward and ten in the next shot is looking left.
the editor needs to make sure that all the sounds also match up to what the charterers are saying or for an action with a prop. if a charterer is speaking out of sink it could damage the quality of the film.
to become an editor one of the most important things that is required is to have experience, this is important as there are many cases of an editor making many continuity errors. although this is unavoidable no matter how experienced an editor may be. depending on the protect a different amount of experience is required, if it is just a youtube video then only a minimal amount of editing experience is required whereas if it is for a high budget film or tv show quite alot of experience and good training is required.
As of May 2011, film or video editors made an average annual wage of
$66,690, or $32.06 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The best in the business were able to make as much as $126,250 or more,
if they were in the top 10 percent. On the other hand, editors in the
bottom 10 percent made $26,350 or less.
to become a director you need to have a deep understanding of films as without that understanding of the film as without this understanding the film id doomed to fail. a director also needs to have experience in directing as they have more knowledge in there field, a good example of this would be Steven Spielberg who was directing short films since he was 16, now 68 he is still directing films and also producing them.
a directors pay varys between the budget of the film, box-office success and number of films that are produced. Steven Spielberg has a net worth of 3.6 billion after his carrier made its first major motion picture in 1975, George Lucas has a net worth of 5 billion after selling his hit franchise "star wars" to disney other directors such as James Cameron is worth of 700 million and director Michal bay has a net worth of 430 million with an annual pay of 63 million.
the producer is the mangier of the film set they work with the director and the studio that they work for to organize schedules, budgets and various other things around the film set. to become a producer you need to have a bachelor's degree in fine arts, acting, writing, journalism, arts management or a comparable discipline. a producer also requires good management, communication and leadership skills. a producer can also work independently such as Steven Spielberg and George Lucas these two are good examples as they have both been involved in massive films where they have only been producing them.
according to 2010 numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the
average annual salary for a film producer is $109,860. For the 15,430
producers and directors working in the los angeles area, that number
jumps to $138,640. . most producers take a cut
of the film's earnings at the domestic and foreign box office, DVD
sales, streaming video contracts, and more. and those earnings move
quickly into the millions.
